Freshwater Pearls
Pearls are the world’s oldest and only organic gemstone. They have been recognized as prized jewels for centuries longer than any cut stone. Almost all other gemstones are formed by mineral deposits that must be mined, cut, and polished before they are ready to use. Pearls, however, are beautiful straight out of the mollusk. Crystals
Crystal beads, whether from China, Austria, Czechloslavakia, the USA, or the multitudes of other locations, is man-made, leaded crystal. Swarovski's Austrian crystal still leads the way in purity and quality since 1892 when he developed a machine that could cut the crystal more precisely than the manuel techniques could and through the tests of time, found the perfect combination of lead and molten glass. Swarovski's crystal is beautiful, but there are those who are running a close second to them, Czech and other Austrian, in particular. The Chinese crystal, offered below, is quite stunning, also. There is, of course, natural occurring crystal and there is jewelry made from it, but I prefer the elegance of man-made lead crystal.
